Santa Barbara Holistic Dentist - Dr. Copeland offers alternative methods of dental treatment in Santa Barbara, CaliforniaLocated in Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Copeland offers alternative methods of dental treatment, using science based holistic approaches to a mixture of modern traditional dentistry. Well-being is the primary focus. The oral cavity is placed in its perspective as part of the whole person. The greatest care is taken to use natural products, biocompatible materials, and sound diagnostic skills for the careful treatment of each individual.

The body must be sound, the immune system healthy, for dental treatment, like all medical treatment to be successful. Referrals to and from like minded healers in the alternative and traditional physician spheres are used to enhance treatment, providing the opportunity for the best possible outcome.

Education is an important aspect of the practice, and time is taken to provide sources for further learning, and understanding.

Primum no nocere - First, do no harm.

A native of Idaho, Dr. Copeland received her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology at the University of Southern Colorado, and her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Washington, Seattle in 1994. Dr. Copeland was invited back as faculty, but declined due to a residency obligation at UMN.

She attended an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. Here she immersed herself in the six recognized specialties of dentistry. “I really felt I would want to practice in a rural area, and felt the obligation to expand my skills in areas where the nearest specialist might be hours away”. During this time, she practiced hospital dentistry, in addition to her resident clinical practice. She was one of two residents selected each year to practice at a satellite clinic in Minneapolis. She was also invited to remain for them.

She felt she wanted to move west though, and settled on the Oregon Coast, where she practiced what she refers to as “enlightened rural dentistry”. Here she became Mercury free.

Cynthia eventually settled in Santa Barbara in 2004, where she now lives with her two beautiful daughters. This is a photo on a recent Sierra Club hike to the Pauper’s Graveyard in the back country of Santa Barbara.

Dr. Copeland has completed the two-year Gnathology and Occlusion Course with Dr's. Tom Basta and Jeff Brucia at the Foundation for Advanced Continuing Education (FACE), in the Bay Area.

Since then, “I’ve had the opportunity to study with Dr. Hal Huggins, Dr’s Phillip Mollica and Robert Harris, in addition to immersing myself into a form of practice that satisfied my sense of life affirming, non-damaging, patient driven, doctor as teacher sense of self. I had for so long repeated traditional dental dictums, without conviction. This was especially true, while in the scope of practice one performs above the standard of care, and feels that there must be better alternative.”

“I learned that I wasn’t alone, that there were lots of ‘nuts and kooks’, as traditional dentists often refer to us, out there. They were from all over the US and the elite of International practitioners, from European countries who had ‘already’ got IT.”

“There are wonderful like-minded practitioners to collaborate with in Santa Barbara: Naturopaths, Physicians. Acupuncture/Acupressure, Lymphatic, Nutritional, Neurological, and Toxicity specialists are all helpful to the dental patient seeking health. I feel honored to work with them and have their expertise when working with a complex patient.”

When combined with the environmental sensitivity of biological dentistry, for me, this is Dentistry both I and the patient can really live with.

Stop Snoring Now!

Serving Santa Barbara & Los Angeles

Always Tired?
(Snoring and Sleep Apnea can KILL you... literally.)

The upcoming annual camping trip was just three weeks away and jokes were already being conjured up. "Bring an extra pillow" they teased. "We'll draw straws to see who's stuck in Ted's tent ". As good natured as the teasing was, for Ted it was embaressing. He knew snoring was common but he also knew his snoring was intrusive and abnormally loud. Ted knew he needed some type of snoring remedy to cure his snoring.

Not only being labeled "a snorer", Ted would routinely wake up horribly tired in the mornings. Blaming it on too many late nights, he vowed to get to bed earlier the next night, always waking up with the same outcome – sluggish, unmotivated and mimicking regular motions of the day.

It's all sounds too familiar occurrence; everyone has a snoring story to tell. But what you may not know, is snoring can be a danger to your health, affect your work, dissolve relationships and be the underlying cause of many safety concerns.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is often caused by a neuromuscular bite imbalance. Approximately 18 Million Americans suffer from obstructive sleep apnea according to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. (2009)

Sleep Apnea is much more serious than just losing a little sleep; it can cause problems ranging from chronic snoring to insulin resistance to heart failure. Sleep Apnea can become a life threatening medical condition and should always be taken seriously.

Treating Sleep Apnea with Oral Appliances

Somnodent Dental Sleep Apnea Treatment ApplianceWhen you seek sleep apnea treatment from Los Angeles dentist, Dr. Mark Weiser, you can rest assured that you are getting care specifically designed for your situation. Dr. Weiser reviews the results of your sleep study with a sleep physician. Then, using his knowledge of dental sleep apnea treatment, he develops a sleep apnea appliance with the help of a lab that focuses on positioning your jaw to open the airway. There are many oral sleep apnea appliances, and each works in a different way. Essentially, they all position the jaw and/or tongue forward. This opens the airway and facilitates easier and more efficient breathing. You can learn about the different sleep apnea devices available here.

Oral appliances are not the only treatments available for obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Weiser has discovered that the most effective solution for sleep apnea sometimes involves two or three treatment options in combination with the oral appliance.

CPAP Sleep Apnea Treatment

Many physicians are unaware of the neuromuscular causes of obstructive sleep apnea. Their default method of treating sleep apnea is to use a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine instead of the oral appliance. CPAP machines force air through a mask that must be worn over the nose and/or mouth throughout the night. The CPAP uses this forced air to hold the airway open with air pressure, ensuring the patient can breathe without interruption.

Oral appliances can be used to make CPAP treatment more comfortable by lowering the pressure and water required and freeing the patient of uncomfortable straps and a mask.
Orthodontic Sleep Apnea Treatment

While not the first treatment that comes to mind for sleep apnea patients, braces can actually be used to re-position and realign your teeth and jaws by expanding the upper and lower jaw, thereby creating more room in your mouth and ultimately opening the airway. Read more about orthodontic sleep apnea treatment.

View of throat of patient who had Sleep Apnea surgeryIf enlarged tonsils and adenoids are the cause of the obstruction, sometimes they must be removed before an oral sleep apnea appliance will do any good. Surgery can significantly reduce blockage of the airway and increase blood oxygen levels. Surgery should not be considered lightly; while it is usually effective, surgery is a serious and irreversible option. At times, the uvula must also be excised as part of an outpatient procedure performed by an ENT specialist. There are also more aggressive surgeries available such as the UP3 and maxillomandibular expansion and/or advancement.

Palatal pillars may be installed as a part of an alternative sleep apnea surgery. These small polyester implants are placed in the soft palate during a single office visit. Unlike removing tonsils, adenoids, or the uvula, this surgery is reversible. The pillars strengthen and reinforce the soft palate, similar to the way concrete is strengthened with rebar. They also prevent the soft palate from vibrating while the patient is sleeping.

Treating Central & Complex Sleep Apnea

Man using the TAP-PAP systemCentral and complex sleep apnea requires treatment in a close relationship with a physician. In these situations, Dr. Weiser will work with the physician to provide an oral sleep apnea appliance called a TAP-PAP in conjunction with a CPAP air system. By using the appliance, the patient avoids wearing a bulky and uncomfortable mask. Instead, "nasal pillows" guide the air directly into the nose. This allows the patient to reduce the pressure setting required on the CPAP machine.

If you're always tired, don't hesitate to contact Dr. Mark T. Weiser today at 805-754-3653 for the Santa Barbara location or 310-237-6620 for the Los Angeles location.

Safe Mercury Filling Removal

Ventura Holistic Dentist - Dr Lori Cardellino

Intuitively people have known it for thousands of years. . . poor oral health leads to poor physical health. Logically it makes perfect sense. Your mouth is a key entry point to the rest of the body. Toxicity, disease or infection can spread through the bloodstream to every tissue, organ and cell in your body.

Back in the day when dentistry and medicine were practiced side by side, it was common knowledge that your teeth could make you sick. In fact, there was a time when dentists were called dental physicians. Over time, dentistry became more about fixing teeth and less about fixing health. . . today, true dental physicians are rare indeed.

Slowly things are changing, and we are beginning to see a movement back toward total body wellness. We now have research proving what has long been suspected . . . your teeth can make you sick!

Amalgam fillings contain 50% mercury, one of the most toxic substances known—not only does the mercury escape from the fillings but it ends up being stored in your body tissues causing disease

  • Bleeding gums are infected gums. . . gum infection is a known risk factor for many serious diseases including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, premature birth, low birth weight babies, cancer and Alzheimer’s.
  • Root canalled teeth are proven reservoirs of toxic bacteria
  • Improperly extracted teeth may form cavitations. . . areas of incompletely healed bone that are a breeding ground for bacteria and their toxins
  • You can be allergic to the materials used to fill your teeth. . . just like you can be allergic to food or other environmental substances.

Mercury Amalgam Removal

So, you've done some research and are considering having your mercury fillings replaced with a healthier, more esthetic alternative. If you're like most people, your research has generated more questions than answers. . .

Why should I have my mercury fillings replaced?
Our recommendation is that you never allow another mercury amalgam filling to be placed in your mouth—of course that would never happen in our office. The decision to replace mercury fillings that are already in your mouth should be carefully considered. There are many reasons to consider the replacement of your existing amalgam fillings:

  • Many people come to us because their physician believes that heavy metals, including mercury, are making them sick and keeping them from getting better. These people are commonly stuck in their illness. They don’t improve even though they are doing all the right things. . . they are seeing excellent physicians, they are receiving exceptional treatments, they are following the prescribed treatments to the letter. Despite their hard work, they are still sick. These people are tired, frustrated, scared and just plain sick of being sick. Many doctors understand that mercury can not only make your sick, but also keep you sick . . . it can block the body’s ability to heal When people are stuck in their illness, often the mercury leaking from their fillings is the obstacle preventing them from getting better. Once the mercury is removed from their mouth and body, treatments begin to work as expected. . . they begin the process of healing.
  • Some people seek us out requesting mercury amalgam filling replacement because they understand that mercury is leaking from their fillings, being stored in their body and may cause disease. They are taking a proactive approach so they don’t end up like the people described above.
  • Still others understand that mercury amalgam is an obsolete material. They have learned that these fillings will eventually damage the underlying tooth structure and have elected to replace them with modern materials before irreversible tooth damage has occurred.

No one can promise that by replacing your amalgam fillings you will experience any specific health benefit, however, many of our patients report they have experienced significant, positive health changes after safe and effective mercury filling replacement. I can guarantee this. . . updating your mercury fillings with modern biocompatible materials will reduce your body burden of a known toxic material and help prevent the eventual tooth related damage caused by amalgam silver fillings.
