At
Whole Health Dentistry, we combine the best of integrative medicine
with tooth preserving traditional dentistry for the type of holistic
care that people who care about their whole bodies deserve.
Located
in Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Copeland offers alternative
methods of dental treatment, using science based holistic approaches
to a mixture of modern and traditional dentistry. Well-being
is the primary focus. The oral cavity is placed in its perspective
as part of the whole person. The greatest care is taken to use
natural products, biocompatible materials, and sound diagnostic
skills for the careful treatment of each individual.
The
body must be sound, the immune system healthy, for dental treatment
(like all medical treatment) to be successful. Referrals to
and from like-minded healers in the alternative and traditional
physician spheres are used to enhance treatment, providing the
opportunity for the best possible outcome. Education is an important
aspect of the practice, and time is taken to provide sources
for further learning, and understanding.
A
native of Idaho, Dr. Copeland received her Bachelor’s
of Science in Biology at the University of Southern Colorado,
and her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Washington,
Seattle in 1994. Dr. Copeland was invited back as faculty, but
declined due to a residency obligation at UMN. She attended
an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the
University of Minnesota, St. Paul.
Here
she immersed herself in the six recognized specialties of dentistry.
“I really felt I would want to practice in a rural area,
and felt the obligation to expand my skills in areas where the
nearest specialist might be hours away”. During this time,
she practiced hospital dentistry, in addition to her resident
clinical practice. She was one of two residents selected each
year to practice at a satellite clinic in Minneapolis. She felt
she wanted to move west though, and settled on the Oregon Coast,
where she practiced what she refers to as “enlightened
rural dentistry”. Here she became Mercury free.
Cynthia
eventually settled in Santa Barbara in 2004, where she now lives
with her two beautiful daughters. Dr. Copeland has completed the
two-year Gnathology and Occlusion Course with Dr's. Tom Basta
and Jeff Brucia at the Foundation for Advanced Continuing Education
(FACE), in the Bay Area. Since then, “I’ve had the
opportunity to study with Dr. Hal Huggins, Dr’s Phillip
Mollica and Robert Harris, in addition to immersing myself into
a form of practice that satisfied my sense of life affirming,
non-damaging, patient driven, doctor as teacher sense of self.
I had for so long repeated traditional dental dictums, without
conviction. This was especially true, while in the scope of practice
one performs above the standard of care, and feels that there
must be better alternative.”
“I
learned that I wasn’t alone, that there were lots of ‘nuts
and kooks’, as traditional dentists often refer to us,
out there. They were from all over the US and the elite of International
practitioners, from European countries who had ‘already’
got IT.”
“There are wonderful like-minded practitioners to collaborate
with in Santa Barbara: Naturopaths, Physicians. Acupuncture/
Acupressure, Lymphatic, Nutritional, Neurological, and Toxicity
specialists are all helpful to the dental patient seeking health.
I feel honored to work with them and have their expertise when
working with a complex patient.”
I
have been practicing dentistry for more than 15 years.
My passion is doing it in a way that it is both healthy for your
teeth as well as your body.
