In 1997 I took an anatomy class in high school and it changed my life. The more I learned about our physiology and the intricate web of activity within our bodies, the more I understood that our systems are designed for health and not for succumbing to disease. My fascination with the natural healing capabilities lead me to chose Chiropractic. In 2002 I walked off the stage in Minnesota with my Chiropractic degree and began my journey as a witness to the power of the human body. I immediately realized another pertinent thing: what if we can enhance the function of the nervous system before it has had time to become toxic from medication and the environment, before the skeletal system has begun the process of degeneration from injuries, and before the muscular system has lost it’s strength and elasticity? If we can do that, then the body and mind should be better equipped to handle all of the stressors it has to face in the future. But that meant that we would have to start our work In-Utero. So, I decided to go through the pediatric certification program of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association completing it in 2004. In 2008 I moved to Santa Barbara 7 months into my own pregnancy and spent the first year at home with my little Sasha. SBMC is here to meet the needs of families and future families in the comfort of their homes, at their workplace, or in my office.
Another life-changing event. This stage of my life allowed me to experience everything I had read and learned firsthand. A woman’s body goes through a multitude of changes in order to sustain and support a developing life within her. The curves are shifting and she may begin to experience headaches, tingling, reflux, anxiety, and swelling (and of course the mood swings and the nausea). But let’s not forget that after the delivery the body needs to change once again and stay strong to support the life which is now on the outside! And in today’s world, it is no longer just taking care of the baby, it may be the house and running off to work. For this exact reason chiropractic care has been very beneficial in stabilizing joints which become overly lax due to the hormone changes, and also in increasing mobility in those joints which are restricted in motion form previous stressors. Aside from emotional stability and proper nutrition, it is imperative for the mother’s spine and pelvis to be balanced, mobile, and supportive to ensure proper development of the fetus, a more peaceful delivery, and a swifter recovery. One of the major issues I address is in-utero constraint and I use the Webster Technique to aid the body in balancing and allowing the fetus to assume the most ideal position throughout pregnancy and for delivery.
In the last 8 years I have had the privilege to adjust babies with shoulder dystocia and cranial offset, infants with reflux and colic, toddlers with ear aches and tummy aches, kids with colds and headaches, and teens with asthma and sports injuries. My daughter was adjusted 4 hours after she was born. Birth was intended to be a natural process. It is obvious from noticing the unique structure of a female pelvis, sensing the cosmic power of each contraction, and tracking the baby’s movements down the birth canal. Unfortunately many times it is still interfered with more than necessary. Some common medical procedures can be the first creation of a Subluxation or misalignment in our little ones and if they are not corrected, the growing body will simply adapt. This builds a layer after layer of compensations in the bones and muscles of our skeletal system which will later have an effect on all other systems of our body. The earlier in life that we detect a Subluxation, the earlier it can be corrected, and the less the body will resist this correction. The brain will communicate more efficiently with all of the cells in the body creating a more balanced human organism. Pediatric adjustments are gentle, mostly contact holds. I incorporate Cranio-Sacral techniques and concentrate on the head and pelvic structures when working with the youngest newcomers. The goal is always to make it a positive experience, and every eye contact, every smile, and every hug lets me know that we’ve succeeded.
